The Gloam

The Gloam

We love it when we find a great young readers novel.  This is a brilliant debut for UK author, Jack Mackay, who is a self-proclaimed horror enthusiast.

About a grieving family, a decaying house and a babysitter with a monster secret. Nothing on Gloam Island is quite what it seems. Gwen, the eldest sibling, knows she’s quite capable of looking after her younger siblings after her mother dies. But stepdad isn’t convinced and enlists the help of a local babysitter. But Gwen isn’t fooled by Esme’s hungry eyes and sharp tongue.

As Esme’s power grows, Gwen must embrace her deepest fears before she can defeat the monster in her home for good. Because as everyone knows, it’s impossible to be brave unless you’re already afraid.

This is a thrilling read even for an adult. It’s aimed at 8-12 year olds, but I would say because of some of the content, it’s more appropriate for 10-13 age group. The story has several threads of societal dynamics running through it, from sibling rivalry to second marriage subtleties.

It’s a heartfelt story and while it deals with fear, it isn’t about dwelling in it. It’s about facing it and finding courage. It doesn’t suggest ignoring difficult emotions, whether fear, sadness, anger, or grief, but rather acknowledging them, understanding their place, and allowing them to propel you forward and make you stronger.
