In the Clearing, J.P. Pomare, Emily's review

J.P Pomare has done it again with his brand-new thriller In the Clearing! If you were a big fan of Call Me Evie like I was then you will LOVE this.
The story is about two people in a rural Australian town. Amy is a young girl that belongs to a cult with many other children and as far as she knows she lives the perfect life. Until one day when the elders kidnap another little girl to add to their ‘perfect’ set. The other children are put in charge of teaching the new addition the rules and enforcing them. Amy’s story is told partly through her journal entries which are super creepy and disturbing.
The other side of the story follows Freya, a mother of a young boy. When a girl goes missing, her life falls to pieces. Her past life threatens to come to the surface and secrets begin to unfold. Freya’s story is told like a countdown, all leading to the big finale when you find out how both stories are intertwined. When I finally thought I had the story figured out something changes, and I was left guessing until the very last page. There were a few times that I had to go back and re-read the page again to process what had just happened.
I made the mistake of reading In the Clearing when I was home by myself at night and I was jumping at every little noise but Pomare’s writing is so good I will read anything that he writes!
