Emily has been reading Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
Emily loved Delia Owens' Where the Crawdads Sing: It is a beautiful coming of age story that is filled with love and heart break and just a wee bit of murder. The story follows a young girl Kya growing up alone in a marsh in South Carolina during the 50’s and 60’s. When the body of a local boy is found close to her home the outcome could change her life forever. The story begins when Kya is a child and her family abandons her in the marsh. She gets labelled the ‘weird marsh girl’ by the town and gets taunted by the other children. She is forced to provide for herself and manages to build a life on her beloved marsh with the help of a few friends, a young boy that teaches her to read and a local shop owner. What moved me most about Kya’s story is that no matter what your upbringing is and whatever life throws at you all you need is a couple of people to believe in you and you can take on the world. Delia Owen’s writing is so brilliant that you can’t help but fall in love with the characters, have your heart broken along with them and feel their joy. You also end up reading along in a southern accent. This book is a definite 10/10.
